J.H. Fowble House

History

Serving today as a bed and breakfast, 7514 Norwood Avenue was once the stately home of local architect J.H. Fowble. He designed much of Sykesville's business district, numerous area homes, and several buildings on Springfield Hospital Center's campus.

Architectural Details

Built in a Queen Anne Style, the original owner-architect of this building intended this structure to be a statement in the community and to increase his work in residential design.

Confirmed Use as of November 4, 2025:​

1883-1885: Frank Brown purchases 41 acres of land, including this property, from Harry Clabaugh, trustee for the Whiting Estate, throughout the Sykesville area, of which this plot was one of several. (30 November 1883: 60-95; 25 May 1884, Liber FJS No. 60, folio 334)

1890: Property conveys from Frank and Mary R. Brown to Emma Favour (5 May 1890, Liber WNM folio 294 #71)

1904: Emma Favour and Charles R. Favour deed the property to Edwin M. Mellor for $2,505 (1 February 1904, JHB 98, folio 550)

1914: Elmer Jenkins (a Main Street butcher, farmer, and landlord) purchases this home for $3,900 (Democratic Advocate, 13 March 1914, p. 5)

1980: Eleanor Hood purchases this property to Victoria K.  Brennan and Jeffrey R. Hartman for $63,500 (26 November 1980; LWS 744 folio 711)

c. 1989-1990: Pack Auto Body, under ownership of Joe Pack, registers for business at this address (Carroll County Times, 20 January 1990, p. 12)

2000: Property transfers from Erich J. Hofman to Stevon B. Crum for $190,000 (Carroll County Times, 9 July 2000, p. 16)

2000-Present: The Inn at Norwood, bed and breakfast, originally owned by Kelly and Stevon Crum. ("Board of Zoning Appeals Public Hearing," Carroll County Times, 4 March 2000, p.24; Carroll County Times, 18 September 2001, p. 6)
