The Gate House offers research appointments year-round (even during our winter closure) at no charge.
Our most frequent request is for records regarding Springfield Hospital Center. While we have many pictures (c. 1896-1950 mostly), and some written resources, due to HIPPA regulations, patient records which are less than 50 years old need to be requested by a relative from the hospital itself.

Where can I find out more about Springfield Hospital?

is a good place to start learning about places of mental healthcare as they compared to one another and what the state thought about individuals in these places at the time. Search "Lunacy Commission" under the "Agency" field to find scans of these original records
Where can I learn more about Elizabeth (Betsy) Patterson?

I want to learn about the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad!
It's true that Sykesville would become one of the earliest areas to be connected by rail in America, being a "whistle stop" since 1831. We have a few artifacts and documents regarding the station downtown, but for more on the B&O company, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Historical society will be your guide.
